Consciousness Poetics Welfare

Mette Leonard Høeg is a consciousness researcher and cultural critic whose work bridges neuroscience, poetics, aesthetics and contemplative practice.

A research fellow at Oxford's Centre for Eudaimonia and Human Flourishing, the Oxford Uehiro Institute and the Interacting Minds Centre at Aarhus University, she investigates how consciousness science, literature and philosophy from Western and Eastern traditions can inform approaches to meaning-making and flourishing in contemporary culture —particularly in the face of new neuro- and biotechnologies and growing existential risks.

She is an accredited meditation teacher and guides weekly meditation sessions at the university. She offers literary and philosophical consultancy, public talks and meditation guidance.

Research

With a background in literature and philosophy, Mette’s work bridges consciousness science, aesthetics, poetics, philosophy and contemplative theory. Her work explores ways of thriving and finding meaning in our age of scientific understanding, anti-anthropocentric sentiments and existential uncertainty —investigating the convergence of Eastern contemplative tradition, Western literary and philosophical tradition and contemporary neuroscience.

Cultural work

As a cultural critic and philosophical commentator, Mette has contributed to public discourse through books, articles, radio programming, and media appearances. Her work combines academic scholarship with public engagement, fostering conversations about art, philosophy and meaning in contemporary culture. She aims to foster critical thinking and substantial cultural dialogue, challenging assumptions and making complex ideas broadly accessible.

Consultancy and meditation

Drawing on her experience in consciousness research, literary and philosophical analysis and contemplative practice, Mette offers philosophical and literary consulting, manuscript development, guided meditations and speaking services for individuals and organisations.
